Jute does not need exaggerating
The fibre's case is strong enough on its own. This page sets out what jute genuinely does well, what we can put in front of your compliance team, and the claims we refuse to make even when a buyer asks us to.
Lifecycle
From delta field to soil again
Jute is grown across the Ganges delta, largely by smallholders on land that floods every year. The whole cycle, from sowing to a bag returning to soil, involves no synthetic polymer at any stage.
Sowing and growth
Sown with the pre-monsoon rains and harvested four to six months later. The crop is rain-fed, needs little pesticide, and is often rotated with rice, which returns organic matter to the field.
Retting
Cut stems are submerged in slow water so microbes loosen the fibre from the woody core. No chemicals are used. The leftover stick is dried and burned as household fuel or pressed into particle board.
Spinning and weaving
Fibre is graded, spun into yarn and woven into hessian at weights from 7 to 14 oz. This is the most energy-intensive step in the chain and the one where mill selection matters most.
Cutting, printing and stitching
Fabric is cut, printed and assembled. This is where a bag becomes more or less recyclable: laminate, PU trim and metal fittings all compromise end-of-life, and we will tell you which of your choices do.
Use, then return
A well-made jute bag survives years of weekly shopping. Once it fails, an unlaminated, cotton-stitched bag can be composted; a laminated one cannot, and belongs in general waste.
Claims
What we will say, and what we will not
Under the EU's tightening rules on environmental claims, a vague green statement on your packaging is now your legal exposure, not ours. So we keep the left-hand column defensible and refuse the right-hand one.
Defensible
- Untreated jute hessian is biodegradable, and we can supply a construction with no plastic component at all.
- Jute is an annual, rain-fed crop harvested in four to six months, grown with low pesticide input relative to cotton.
- A jute shopper used weekly lasts for years, so it displaces a large number of single-use bags over its life.
- Retting and fibre extraction are mechanical and microbial, not chemical.
- Any specific figure we give you is traceable to a named test report or to your own bill of materials.
Not defensible
- "Carbon neutral" or "climate positive" — we hold no verified lifecycle assessment for our products, so the words would be decoration.
- "100% compostable" on any laminated, PU-trimmed or polyester-stitched bag. The laminate does not compost, and saying so would be false.
- A specific water or CO₂ saving per bag against cotton or polypropylene, unless you commission the study and we can cite it.
- "Organic jute" — no certified organic jute supply chain is available to us at commercial volume today.
- Any claim of our own certification. Certificates belong to the mills and workshops that hold them, and we name those holders instead.

What can be evidenced, and by whom
Nothing in this table is held by Jutery. Each item is held by a mill, a workshop or an accredited laboratory, and we arrange and pass on the evidence.

Packaging & freight
The plastic usually hides in the packing
A buyer will specify an unlaminated, plastic-free bag and then accept it wrapped in an individual polybag inside a poly-strapped carton. These are the alternatives we offer, and what each one costs you.
- Paper belly-band instead of an individual polybag — adds a little labour, removes the polymer entirely.
- Jute or cotton sleeve for premium retail presentation, made from the same fabric family as the bag.
- Kraft-paper tape and paper strapping in place of PP strapping on master cartons.
- Nested and compressed packing plans that reduce carton count, which cuts both your freight cost and the shipped volume.
- Recycled-content cartons where the destination's humidity allows it.
Ask for the packing plan
We send carton dimensions, pieces per carton and cartons per pallet with every quotation, so your logistics team can model the load before you commit.
Sea over air, by default
We quote sea freight unless you ask otherwise. Air is available for event deadlines, and we will say plainly what it costs in both money and emissions.

No buyer of ours will ever be told "our factory" without being told which one. In force now.
Plastic-free packing as the default quote
Polybag packing becomes an opt-in, priced alternative rather than the assumption. Within the first twelve months of trading.
A social-audited unit for every repeat style
Any style we ship more than twice moves to a SEDEX or BSCI audited unit, or we tell you why it has not.
A real lifecycle assessment before we claim one
When volume justifies the cost, we will commission a third-party LCA on our two highest-selling styles and publish it — figures first, marketing second.
