Jute prints well, but it does not print like paper or like a cotton tee. It is brown, absorbent, coarsely woven and slightly irregular — which means a design that looks perfect on screen can lose its fine strokes and shift two shades darker on the finished bag. Choosing the right method, and adjusting the artwork for the surface, is most of the job.
- Screen print is right for most orders: 300+ pieces, up to four colours, best value.
- Flexo beats it on unit cost above roughly 2,000 pieces, because it prints the roll before cutting.
- Embroidery for premium logos under about 12 cm. Priced by stitch count, not area.
- Match colour on a jute swatch, never on paper. Expect everything to read darker.
- Minimum 1 mm line weight, 4 mm text height for screen. Below that, the weave wins.
Why jute is a difficult surface
Four properties of the fabric drive every decision that follows.
- It is brown. Unbleached jute is a mid-tone warm brown, so it acts like a coloured background. Any ink that is not fully opaque will be tinted by it, and light colours effectively disappear without an underbase.
- It is absorbent. Natural fibre wicks ink, so edges spread slightly. That spread is what eats fine detail.
- It is coarsely woven. The surface is a grid of raised threads with valleys between them. Ink sits on the peaks and skips the valleys, which is why very thin lines break up and why a print on jute always has a slightly textured character.
- It is not perfectly flat or dimensionally stable. Hessian moves. Tight multi-colour registration is harder than on a woven-tight cotton canvas.
None of this is a defect — the texture is a large part of why jute looks good. But it does mean the design has to be built for the material.
The five methods compared

A sixth option worth knowing: a woven label sewn to the panel. It is not printing, but it is often the cheapest way to carry a brand mark permanently, it looks deliberately premium, and it survives washing better than any print.
Colour on a brown substrate
This causes more disappointment than any other aspect of jute printing, and it is entirely predictable.
A Pantone reference is defined on white coated paper. Print the same ink on mid-brown jute and it reads darker, duller and warmer. Pale colours — pastels, light greys, anything tinted — can vanish almost completely. A mid-blue can come out looking slate. Yellow on brown is close to invisible.
Three ways to deal with it:
- Match on jute, not paper. Insist that colour approval happens on an actual jute swatch, and that you see a photograph of it before the bulk run. Any supplier who sends a paper proof for a jute bag has not thought about this.
- Use a white underbase for light or bright colours. The printer lays down white first, then the colour on top. It costs an extra screen and an extra pass, so it adds to unit cost — but it is the difference between the colour you specified and a muddy approximation.
- Or lean into it. Single-colour designs in black, deep navy, forest green or a warm brass tone look excellent on natural jute and need no underbase. The most attractive jute bags on the market are usually one-colour prints that work with the substrate.
Also expect some variation between production batches. Natural jute shade varies by fibre lot, so the same ink on two different rolls will not photograph identically. If shade consistency is critical across repeat orders, say so up front — it means reserving fabric from a single lot, which has cost and lead-time implications.
Minimum line weights and text
These are the practical floors. Below them, the weave and the ink spread take over.

Practical consequences for design: avoid hairline rules and thin-stroke display faces; a delicate serif logo will lose its serifs. Reversed-out type — light text inside a solid printed block — needs to be larger than positive type, because the ink spreads inward and closes up the counters in letters like e and a. And avoid fine gradients or halftone screens; on a coarse weave they read as blotches rather than tone.
Multi-colour registration
Each colour in a screen print is a separate pass through a separate screen, and the fabric can shift slightly between passes. On jute, expect registration accuracy of roughly ±1 mm on a well-run job.
Design around it rather than fighting it:
- Avoid designs that depend on colours butting exactly together. A 0.5 mm gap or a slight overlap is far more forgiving than a precise abutment.
- Use a keyline — a thin dark outline around coloured shapes hides small misregistration completely.
- Trap light colours under dark ones rather than the reverse, so any slip is less visible.
- Keep it to two or three colours unless volume justifies flexo. Each additional screen adds a charge, a pass, and another chance to misregister.
One-off charges, explained
These should always be itemised separately in a quotation, never folded into the unit price — otherwise your repeat-order price looks like a discount the supplier did not intend to give.

Ask explicitly who owns the screens, cylinders and embroidery files after you have paid for them. The answer should be that you do, and that they can be released to another supplier on request. This matters more than it sounds: it is what stops a print charge being re-levied every time you re-order, and it is what makes moving suppliers possible without redeveloping the artwork.
Choosing by quantity
- Under 300 pieces — heat transfer or embroidery. Screen charges do not amortise sensibly at this volume, and both of these have no origination cost to speak of.
- 300 to 2,000 pieces — screen print, one to three colours. This is the sweet spot for most corporate and retail orders.
- 2,000 to 10,000 pieces — screen print still competitive; get a flexo quote alongside it and compare total cost including cylinders rather than unit price alone.
- Above 10,000 pieces — flexo, almost always, unless the design is a small logo in which case embroidery may still be worth quoting for the perceived value it adds.
- Any quantity, premium positioning — embroidery or a woven label, regardless of the above. Both read as more expensive than they cost.
Artwork preparation checklist
- Send vectors. AI, EPS or PDF, with all fonts converted to outlines. This is non-negotiable for screen, block and flexo.
- Raster only if unavoidable, at 300 dpi minimum at final print size. A logo pulled from a website is roughly 72 dpi at thumbnail size and will not survive.
- Specify Pantone solid coated references, not CMYK values or RGB hex. Solid inks are mixed to Pantone, and a CMYK breakdown is not a colour instruction.
- State the artwork dimensions in millimetres, and the placement from a fixed edge — "top of artwork 12 cm below the bag opening, centred" leaves nothing to interpretation.
- Separate the colours into layers if you can, and name them by Pantone reference.
- Flag whether a white underbase is wanted, or ask the supplier to advise.
- Send a link, not an attachment. A Drive, Dropbox or WeTransfer link survives spam filters and size limits; a 40 MB attachment often does not arrive at all.
Questions we get asked
Will the print rub off?
A properly cured screen print on jute should pass a normal abrasion test. Ask for a rub test on the sample — a dry cloth and a wet cloth, twenty strokes each — and ask for it to be included in the lab panel if the bag will be in heavy use.
Can you print on both sides?
Yes. It is a second print operation, so it roughly doubles the print element of the cost and adds screens for each colour on the second side. Common on conference and retail bags.
Can I print over a seam?
Not well. Printing across a seam or a handle attachment leaves a gap and a distortion, because the surface is no longer flat. Keep artwork inside the flat panel area, and ask the supplier to confirm the maximum printable area for your specific construction.
